SynSisal® Tile: A New Way to See Sisal

  • Christy Lesseig

Few materials shape a room as quietly as sisal. Its woven texture adds depth underfoot and creates a calm, earthy palette designers rely on to ground a space. But in commercial environments, natural fibers don’t always hold up. This is why Curran created SynSisal®—to offer the look of sisal in a synthetic format built for commercial spaces. Now, we expand that vision further, making the transition to sisal-look flooring even easier with SynSisal® Tile.

SynSisal® Tile reimagines that natural look in modular form. Designed to reveal texture gradually across an installed floor, these sisal-look carpet tiles capture the visual rhythm of natural sisal while offering the durability and flexibility required for modern commercial interiors. Additionally, SynSisal® carpet tiles are crafted with ECONYL® regenerated nylon for a more sustainable approach to flooring: recycled materials, adhesive-free installation, and less material waste.

Expertise + Collaboration

SynSisal® Tile represents an evolution of Curran’s 35+ years focus on natural fiber rugs and carpet. A deep understanding of how materials like sisal behave in a space—how they carry color, light, and texture—is at the core of this collection.

The development of SynSisal® Tile came into focus through a close collaboration between Curran’s product designer Stephanie Piché and independent textile designer Cristina Orozco Cuevas. Through a shared exploration of fiber texture, color inflection, and movement, they refined color blends, yarn construction, and how texture is perceived across a floor.

a sisal alternative for commercial flooring: synsisal® tile reads like natural sisal, with warm tonal colors and a ribbed visual effect

The goal was not simply to imitate woven sisal, but to translate its character into a modular format suited to contemporary commercial environments. Through subtle tonal variation and a carefully engineered pattern, SynSisal® Tile captures the visual complexity of woven sisal.

A Nature-Inspired Palette

The SynSisal® Tile color palette draws on the natural earth tones and subtle variations of gray and brown found in sisal plant fibers. Rather than relying on flat, uniform color, each tone blends multiple shades to recreate the quiet complexity that gives sisal its depth.

Translating the organic character of natural fiber into a synthetic yarn required careful color development. By layering complementary tones within each yarn, the colors achieve the visual richness associated with sisal.

Four refined tones move from warm, golden hues to cooler mineral grays. This range allows designers to bring a grounded, natural palette into commercial interiors and maintain flexibility across different project types.

The Bouclé Look

Ridge Tile is the first style in the SynSisal® Tile collection. Ridge Tile draws inspiration from the classic sisal bouclé, defined by its linear rhythm of tightly woven loops. Named for the natural lines found in geologic rock formations, Ridge Tile interprets that structure through pattern and tonal variation.

See texture in a new light.

Modular by design, SynSisal® Tile conjures texture through optical mirage: a ribbed, dimensional surface reveals its full effect once it repeats across the floor, where it becomes indistinguishable from natural sisal.

With SynSisal® Tile, seeing is believing.

Installation, Simplified

SynSisal® Tile is designed for easy installation. Simply place and press each tile—no need for additional adhesives. Ideal for premium hospitality, workplace, and other high-traffic environments where design matters.

The modular format also gives designers flexibility in how the floor is laid out.

Install SynSisal® Tiles in a monolithic pattern for a seamless, wall-to-wall effect.

Or, install the tiles in a quarter-turn pattern to introduce a subtle, checkered variation in texture.

Beyond installation, the system supports long-term maintenance. Individual tiles can be replaced in minutes, allowing spaces to adapt over time without the need for full floor replacement.

Natural Look, Commercial Performance

While SynSisal® Tile captures the visual character of sisal, it was designed as a sisal-look carpet tile suited to the demands of commercial interiors. The tile format lets designers bring the warm, natural fiber look into spaces where durability and flexibility are essential.

  • Consciously Crafted: Made with ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarns sourced from nylon carpet scraps, old fishing nets, and post-consumer waste. The result is a product that feels good, looks good, and performs responsibly.
  • Design Versatility: Works seamlessly across design styles. Preserves the grounded, biophilic qualities designers value in sisal while supporting the realities of commercial projects.
  • Easy Replacement: Replace individual tiles as needed, extending the life of the floor without full replacement.
