What is broadloom carpet?

  • Teneille Tierce and Christy Lesseig

Published November 2017 | Updated March 2024

Broadloom is carpet made in wide rolls—usually 13′ and up to 16’4″—and installed to fit the exact dimensions of a room. It’s a traditional and versatile flooring option used in residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces for its seamless look, comfort, and design flexibility.

Below, we break down what broadloom carpet is, how it’s made, where it works best, and why designers still choose it today.

What exactly is broadloom carpet?

Broadloom is carpet woven or tufted on a broad or wide loom. It is produced in large, continuous rolls and used for wall-to-wall installations. Then, the rolls are cut on site to fit a room, hallway, stairs, or an entire floor.

Broadloom can be made from:

  • Natural fibers like sisal, wool, seagrass, jute, coir
  • Performance synthetic fibers like nylon, ECONYL®, polypropylene, rPET

What is a loom?

A loom is a device or a machine used to weave fibers together into carpet or fabric. It holds yarns under tension and interlaces them in structured patterns to create a durable, continuous material.

Modern looms range from traditional mechanical looms to advanced, computer-controlled weaving systems. The weaving method used on the loom influences the carpet’s texture, stability, and overall look.

Benefits of Broadloom Carpet

1. Seamless, cohesive look: A continuous surface with minimal seams makes a room feel larger and more polished.

2. Excellent for acoustics: Softens sound—great for bedrooms, offices, hallways, and open-plan spaces.

3. Comfort and insulation: Works beautifully with padding for extra comfort underfoot.

4. Design flexibility: Use for wall-to-wall installations, extra-large custom-cut rugs, stair runners and irregular room shapes.

5. Large selection of textures and materials: From chunky natural sisals to soft wools or durable synthetics, there’s a broadloom for every aesthetic and performance need.

Natural fibers like sisal and seagrass bring organic texture, while wool elevates a space with softness and luxury. And performance fibers offer durability in high-traffic environments.

How is broadloom installed?

Wall-to-wall installation requires careful planning and a skilled installer. They will:

  • Measure accurately
  • Seam and stretch the carpet properly
  • Advise on padding
  • Handle stair runners, landings, and irregular spaces

Flat weave or natural fiber broadloom installation requires special techniques. Learn more in our in-depth guide Flat Weave Carpet Installation — Everything You Need To Know. Additionally, full guidelines for each weave are available under the Installation tab on every product page as well as each material type on our installation guides page.
