We get asked this question all of the time. The honest answer is that sisal is naturally coarse, not soft. Because sisal comes from the agave plant, the fibers are strong, stiff, and textured, qualities that make it durable and long-lasting, but not plush underfoot.
That said, some sisal weaves do feel more comfortable than others. Tighter weaves, like this classic bouclé (Madrid) on the right, tend to feel firmer.

Chunky sisal weaves with thicker yarns have a more open structure and are generally considered the “softest” within the sisal category. If you’re looking specifically for a sisal rug that feels more forgiving, here are some styles to explore:

Many customers who ask about sisal are curious about all the natural fiber rugs we carry. They want a rug crafted form natural materials with a textured look, and sisal isn’t the only option. In those cases, we often recommend fibers like jute, seagrass, or wool. Each offers a beautiful organic feel with a noticeably softer texture:
- Jute: warm, earthy, and naturally softer than sisal
- Seagrass: smooth, tight, and comfortable with a subtle sheen
- Wool: softest underfoot and exceptionally durable
Every natural fiber comes with its own strengths, and the best match depends on how the rug will be used. If you want a deeper dive, our Ultimate Guide to Rug Fibers or the post What is the difference between sisal, seagrass, coir, jute and abaca? are helpful for comparing options.
