The Story of Jacaranda Carpets
In 2003, Richard Meagar flew to India and ordered his first container of carpet after a friend showed him an enchanting carpet sample. Meager saw potential in that carpet sample, with its unique, handmade textures, quality craftsmanship, and enduring style. After his pivotal trip to India, the Jacaranda Carpets company began to take shape. To this day, Richard Meager and his wife, Lucy Meager, own and operate Jacaranda Carpets in Desborough, England, a small town well-known for its weavers.
Inspiration
Natural fibers are the inspiration behind Jacaranda’s beautiful collection of carpet and rugs. Skilled artisans in India hand-weave sustainable materials like wool and TENCEL™ into heritage rugs using traditional techniques and machinery. Jacaranda’s rugs radiate character, with unique textures and colorways that range from muted creams to vibrant jewel tones.
The fragrant jacaranda trees that line the streets of Cape Town, where Meager spent his childhood, and New Delhi, where he purchased his first container of carpet, inspired the company name. The violet-purple flowers of the jacaranda tree inform Jacaranda’s deep purple logo.
Additionally, the collection names elicit a sense of place. The lavish Arani weave is named after a town in South India known as “The Silk City.” Satara’s vivid colorways echo the vibrant wildflowers that transform the Kass Plateau near the city of Satara, India, into a vibrant wonderland during the monsoon season. The wool weave Willingdon is named after Willingdon Island, which serves as the home for the port of Kochi, Kerala, a centuries-old trade center.

Jacaranda approaches the manufacturing process with the same careful consideration they put into choosing the materials that make their product. Ethical labor practices, including safe working conditions and an absence of child labor, are of paramount importance to Jacaranda.
Since many skilled hands touch and craft each Jacaranda carpet—one roll of handwoven broadloom carpet takes 210 hours to make—the company partners with GoodWeave™ in the production of their rugs. A GoodWeave™ certification assures integrity in the production process, ethical treatment of adult carpet weavers, and no child labor.
The GoodWeave™ organization was founded in 1994 by Indian activist and Nobel laureate Kailish Satyarthi. Since then, GoodWeave™ works tirelessly to eradicate child labor in global supply chains. They provide independent, unannounced inspections of facilities as well as monitoring and certification. Furthermore, GoodWeave™ provides and supports educational opportunities for children in weaving communities. Further, TENCEL™ and Lenzing go beyond carbon offsetting to lower its carbon footprint by committing to being carbon-zero by 2050.
Is TENCEL™ the same as viscose?
No, TENCEL™ is a branded lyocell fiber made in a sustainably-minded, closed-loop process by Lenzing AG. Both are made from wood pulp, but with TENCEL™, you are assured that the wood pulp came from sustainably managed forests and processed with a non-toxic organic compound in a closed loop-process. Furthermore, TENCEL™ is cleanable and durable.
