Life expectancy of a sisal rug

  • Lindsay Buzzo

Published March 2016 | Updated March 2024

wcottoncornerThe life expectancy of a sisal rug all depends on where it’s used, the amount of traffic (human and pet) it receives, its exposure to high moisture levels, and whether it’s been spilled upon. These are durable rugs that can last 5, 10, 15 years… but if a large, nasty stain occurs, you could be talking about a MUCH shorter period of time. If you want your investment to last, you’ll want to avoid direct contact with water/condensation, food, liquid spills, or extreme amounts of dirt or grease. Maybe a sisal rug underneath your family dining table is not the best idea for a household with young children.

Another culprit that influences a sisal rug’s life expectancy is its binding. Many of our clients have their sisal rug bound in cotton or linen bindings. Our experience has told us that typically, the binding is the first part of the rug to show wear and tear. It needs to be replaced, especially if the color of the binding is a lighter tone. So just remember, sisal rugs will stain easily and show dirt. Plus, although sisal fibers are very durable and wear very well, they can be tricky to clean. If you want to be on the safe side, we would suggest going with a sisal weave with lots of color variation and with a binding that is darker so it won’t show dirt that easily. Also, taking a look at our cleaning tips for natural fiber rugs might not hurt. It may help you decide what rug to buy for which space or just prepare you for the first spill—it will happen.

    Dear Sir or Madam,

Can you recommend a retail store near Boston; Providence, RI; Newport, RI; or Cape Cod, MA that carries your Sisal products.

    Thank you,
    Ellen Staelin

      Hello Ellen,

Thank you for contacting us about our products. Our design studio is located in Seattle, WA, but we can ship our products anywhere in the country. We recommend ordering swatch samples of your favorite weaves first to get a good idea of what a rug would like in your space. Our customer service team would be happy to help with any further questions.

      Thank you,
      Patrick
